Ooh, how achingly trendy…

March 12th, 2004

…I find myself sitting in a Starbucks and surfing wirelessly courtesy of a voucher for a free hour of T-Mobile. A suprisingly painless process - my wifi card picked up the network once it realised it wasn’t going to see my home AP, and it got an IP address on the second attempt, after popping the card out and back in again. Then the login page popped up, in went the details, and I was up and surfing.

So far everything’s worked - IMAP email, a VPN, telnet, VNC, Newsgator - and if this gets posted, blogging. I’m not sure I’d make a habit of it at £5 an hour, but it beats grabbing email on a P800. The are two downsides so far - the comfy chairs are too narrow to get your elbows comfortably into a typing position, and now that I’m sat here with my laptop on my lap I can’t nip back to the counter for a refill. But apart from that, it’s living up to its promise…

So YOU were the person I saw in Starbucks actually using this service!!

Are you brave enough to try McDonalds? - I think they use BT’s connection.
