This is probably getting boring, me ranting about how wonderful Macs – and in particular OS X – are. But then how many other boxes could you run a fully-featured Apache webserver, PHP, PERL, and MySQL on – and then to top it all, Moveable Type?
Admittedly, getting MT to work was a little bit of a challenge – I tried to figure it out myself and failed miserably, largely because it involved such scary things as compiling PERL modules and other such Unix wizardry. But of course the great thing about the net is that there’s no such thing as a unique problem, and the instructions at Maczealots meant that second time around, it was up and running in about twenty minutes.
All of which is going to make sorting out the new blog site that I’m currently working on a great deal quicker and easier, not least because I don’t now need a live net connection to test the layouts and what have you…

I loved the way my mac came with Apache and PHP pre-installed. It’s been great timesaver and really helped me get started learning scripting easily. I also had MovableType on my mac for a while. The best (for me) is that all the tricks I learn on my mac seem to apply just as easily to any unix/linux server since they use the same terminal. It’s not just long-time mac users either, all the Java programmers at MIT who were carrying PCs three years ago now sport powerbooks. OS X has turned macs into real programmer’s machines.
Which is exactly why this box of tricks was such a revelation. Sure, you _can_ get all the unixy baggage running on a Wintel box, but not without a fair degree of hacking around and a pretty high buggeration factor. Whereas OS X has it running out of the box. I’ve got the best of both worlds – Unix red in tooth and claw for when I’m feeling particularly geeky and want to do it all the hard way, and a nice shiny girly interface for actually getting some work done. The perfect compromise
*yawn*
Yes it is getting a tad boring.
What? Me? A jealous PC user?? Never!!! I *love* having to FTP a file to my server to see if some PHP code has worked.. it’s all part of the ‘joy’ of PHP development.
Bah, I could do all that in Windows
. Apache has builds for NT/2000/XP/2003, there’s a Windows version of PHP and Cygwin has Perl (as does a free package from ActiveState), and MySQL has Windows binaries.
But would you *want* to run all that on a Wintel box…?
Your day-to-day client, that is, not some souped-up dedicated server
Hey, I’ve got Apache, PHP, Perl and MySQL all running quite happily on my PC. No performance issues, no bugs …
So there, or something.
Ah, you’re all jealous because my icons bounce up and down…
