Mortgage Catch-22

<sarcasm> I just love it when bureaucracy creates a closed loop. </sarcasm> The last piece in the moving house jigsaw is getting the formal mortgage offer from the building society, and for some strange reason they’ve decided that they want me to insure the new house before they’ll issue the offer. The only slight problem with this is that I can’t actually insure the house until I own it, thereby creating a neat Catch-22.

All of which seemed to be beyond the muppet at the building society when I called to enquire about this inherent contradiction – in order to satisfy their requirement, I’d either have to a) take out a worthless policy that wouldn’t pay out because I don’t own the house yet; or b) not take out a policy and just tell them that I had. Which bizarrely enough, seemed to be all that was required – answering “yes” to the question “Have you taken out insurance” was enough for them, which makes me wonder what was the point of having the requirement in the first place.

Unless it’s a somewhat cack-handed way of trying to upsell their insurance policies, which at five times more than the nearest quote are not exactly competitive…
