The “Pepsi Girl blog” controversy continues to rumble on – we hear from a reliable source that both PepsiCo and their marketing agency are disavowing any knowledge of the blog, insisting that it’s a freelance (and presumably unauthorised) effort. The latest content on the blog itself certainly seems to support that – it’s now taken a distinctly fratboy turn.
All of which leaves Pepsi in a somewhat difficult situation – if it’s a freelance effort, it’s not one that’s had a positive effect on their brand. And there’s another angle which they’re going to need to consider – read from a female point of view, it’s actually a rather disturbing blog, in a creepy-stalky kind of way. Not quite the sort of thing that a major multinational brand is going to want to be associated with.
So, are Pepsi going to hold their nerve and take an “any publicity is good publicity angle”, or is there a cease-and-desist lawyergram heading Blogspot’s way in the near future?
