SwiftRiver builds on Twitter Vote Report, a platform for crowd-sourced election monitoring. Twitter Vote Report made it possible for US voters to report voting irregularities in real-time using a standard set of tags for monitoring wait time at polling places.
The SwiftRiver project (or just “Swift” to friends) is expanding this approach into a toolkit for crowdsouring specific types of data (such as wait times at polling stations) so that it can be reused in other applications and visualizations. The developers of Swift are particularly interested in crisis reporting and international media criticism. By providing a general purpose crowdsourcing tool we hope to create a tool reusable in many contexts.

"This train of thought brought us to identify what it would take to have an ambient orb capable of displaying more than one piece of information at any time. When put like this, the answer is fairly obvious; have an orb that can glow more than one colour at any time."
Note to self – must try this with the tricolour lamps that have been kicking around in the garage for ages…
