WHO AM I?

I’m a specialist in exploiting social software, Enterprise 2.0 and open source tools to make information flow better – helping people work together more effectively making the work environment less toxic, and helping organisations engage with their customers in new and innovative ways.

I’ve got experience of running projects to build systems in a wide range of sectors, and specialise in translating business requirements into technical specs – then creating great user experiences. I speak both management and geek fluently and bring sense to acronym soups. Given the choice, I’m a fan of open-source software, but I’m equally at home with traditional corporate technology. I’ve got an MBA and am a certified project manager (but don’t hold those against me). When I’m not working I take photographs and blog far too irregularly.

My technology and consultancy skills include a variety of open-source and proprietary Web 2.0 technology, and experience of making APIs and tools such as weblogs, wikis, RSS, mashups and a variety of web-based cleverness work in commercial environments.  I design user experiences, process flows and information architectures.

Want to hire me? I’m freelance, and available to
hire for interesting projects at reasonable rates.

WHAT CAN I DO?

I work with my clients to exploit next generation social software solutions to deliver smarter, simpler, more social IT solutions, both internally within organisations and externally with customers and clients.

I can define and deliver a range of Agile projects, both internally and externally-focussed.  This starts with helping to develop strategies for using social IT, then designing the user experience and information architecture, before defining the technical solution.  I then work with colleagues from a range of disciplines to delivery and implementation the end products, while maintaining open and positive relationships with the client.  My emphasis is always on delivering simple, elegant and usable solutions that solve the underlying problems.

A few examples of the kind of projects that I’ve delivered include:

  • running a international airline’s project to build a social networking site from the ground up in 12 weeks
  • overhauling the website and delivery channels of an international brand intelligence agency using an open-source content management system, while redefining their customer segmentation strategy
  • managing the redevelopment of the BBC Blogs Network onto a new platform and with an improved user experience, through a full information architecture and user experience redesign.
  • implementing a revamped intranet for the Victoria & Albert Museum using a customised wiki platform
  • designing an online collaboration portal for clinicians and public health professionals built in Ruby on Rails
